Lipan Kitonga

Lipan KitongaKitonga was born in a mud hut, in the bush of Northern Kenya and raised in a pretty traditional Maasai fashion. He managed Il‘Ngwesi Community lodge for a number of years and is now on the board of directors, as well as being a director of Leparua Community Trust. Kitonga established and is now chairman of Ramiti le Maa Youth Group, just one of several local enterprise initiatives he is involved with. He is currently a guide and manager of Walking Wild Safaris, a partnership between his community and local entrepreneurs.

As a Maasai and a pastoralist, with an intimate knowledge of the region and its people, Kitonga’s most valued role within DARE is letting us know when we’re not getting it right, helping DARE to gain a better understanding of the environment and communities we work with. More than any of us he really understands what it takes for local communities to shape their own future and how the benefits can change lives. He understands this because he has lived it himself.
